The Ultimate Morocco Itinerary: A Journey Through the Heart of Morocco

Book Your Excursion

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the magic of Morocco—camel rides across sweeping desert dunes, ancient medinas filled with spices and stories, the iconic blue alleyways of Chefchaouen, and vibrant markets buzzing with life—this itinerary is your ultimate guide.

Morocco is a place of contrasts and wonder: where the Sahara meets snow-capped mountains, where thousand-year-old traditions live side-by-side with modern city life, and where every day feels like stepping into a storybook.

I’ve spent months researching, refining, and curating the perfect route through this unforgettable country—and this blog post lays out exactly how to experience Morocco at its best. Bonus? I’m leading a women’s group trip following this exact itinerary in November 2025, and we still have a few spots left (more on that at the end).

Let’s dive into the best Morocco itinerary that hits every highlight and beyond.

Day 1: Welcome to Marrakech – Gateway to Morocco

You’ll arrive in Marrakech, the heartbeat of Morocco, where centuries-old traditions meet modern energy. Once you land, you’ll be greeted at the airport and whisked away to your hotel to settle in. That evening, we gather for a welcoming dinner—a chance to meet your fellow travelers and get a taste of Moroccan hospitality.

Day 2: The Sights, Sounds & Soul of Marrakech

With a local guide, we’ll dive into the city’s rich history and architecture.

  • Visit the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakech and a symbol of the city.

  • Explore the opulent Bahia Palace, known for its intricate tile work and serene courtyards.

  • Stop at a Berber pharmacy and learn about Morocco’s famous argan oils and natural remedies.

  • Wander through the Jamaa El Fnaa square, where snake charmers, food vendors, and storytellers create an unforgettable atmosphere.

In the afternoon, relax with a luxurious Hammam spa experience, and end the day with a sunset view at Dar El Bacha, one of Marrakech’s hidden gems.

Day 3: Marrakech from Above + A Day of Exploration

We’ll rise before the sun for a truly magical experience:

  • Hot air balloon ride over the red city and surrounding desert. Watching the sun rise from the sky is a moment you’ll never forget.

  • Visit Ben Youssef Madrassa, an ancient Islamic college that stuns with its ornate design and peaceful courtyards.

  • Enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon at your own pace—shopping in the souks, sipping mint tea, or relaxing poolside.

Day 4: Through the Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou & Dades Valley

We leave Marrakech behind and travel into the mountains.

  • Drive through the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n'Tichka Pass.

  • Stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ancient mudbrick kasbah featured in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

  • Visit a local rose cooperative and learn how Morocco’s famed rosewater and oils are produced.

Overnight in the stunning Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations and lush oases.

Day 5: Hiking Monkeys Fingers

Start the day with a 4-hour hike through the Monkeys Fingers, one of the most unique rock formations in Morocco. It’s the perfect way to connect with nature and take in the beauty of southern Morocco. After lunch, we’ll relax and soak in sunset views from a panoramic terrace.

Day 6: Canyon Views to Desert Dreams

We hit the road toward the Sahara, with a few incredible stops along the way:

  • Todra Gorges, a dramatic canyon perfect for walking and photography.

  • Drive through Erfoud to reach the edge of the Sahara.

  • In the evening, ride camels at sunset into the Sahara Desert, arriving at our luxury desert camp where dinner, music, and starry skies await.

Day 7: Desert Culture & Adventure

Wake up surrounded by golden dunes and dive into the richness of desert life.

  • Visit a fossil quarry to see ancient remnants of life preserved in stone.

  • Stop by a traditional Gnawa village, known for its unique music and cultural history.

  • Lunch with a nomadic family, a rare opportunity to connect and share stories.

  • Try sandboarding or hop on an ATV for an adrenaline rush across the dunes.

Day 8: From Sahara Sands to Cedar Forests

We leave the desert and head north.

  • Take in stunning views of the Ziz Valley, an oasis framed by cliffs.

  • Visit the Cedar Forest, where you can spot and even feed the famous Barbary macaque monkeys.

  • Stop in Ifrane, nicknamed “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and crisp air.

  • Wrap up with another rejuvenating Hammam session and settle into Fes.

Day 9: Fes – Morocco’s Spiritual & Cultural Capital

Fes is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the world.

  • Explore the Royal Palace and its grand golden gates.

  • Take in a panoramic view of the city, a maze of rooftops and minarets.

  • Visit a ceramic workshop to see the ancient art of Moroccan tilework.

  • Tour the famous Fes tannery, where leather has been dyed by hand for centuries.

  • Finish the day with a hands-on Moroccan cooking class, where you’ll learn to make traditional dishes you can recreate at home.

Day 10: The Road to Chefchaouen

We travel north through the Rif Mountains to reach Chefchaouen, Morocco’s most photogenic city.

  • Take scenic stops and enjoy a coffee break in Ouazzane.

  • Arrive in the blue city, where we’ll explore the medina and shops.

  • End the day with a sunset view from the Spanish Mosque, perched above the city.

Day 11: From the Mountains to the Coast

We begin our journey toward the coast, visiting two of Morocco’s historic cities.

  • In Rabat, explore the Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum.

  • Wander the peaceful Oudaya Kasbah, a fortress with ocean views.

  • Continue on to Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city.

Day 12: Farewell, Morocco

After a final breakfast, we’ll head to the airport for departures, hearts full and friendships made.

If hiking in the Italian Alps is calling your name, there’s no better adventure than the Alta Via 1 (AV1)—a 75-mile hut-to-hut trek in the Dolomites that delivers world-class views, rustic charm, and one hell of a personal accomplishment. I hiked the Alta Via 1 Dolomites trail in July 2024 and I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know: the itinerary, how to book rifugios, when to go, and how to prep like a pro. And if all the planning feels overwhelming—don’t worry. I’ve created the Ultimate Alta Via 1 Digital Guide , a downloadable planning tool that takes all the guesswork out of your AV1 adventure (more on that below). What Is the Alta Via 1? The Alta Via 1 (often called Alta Via One or AV1) is a legendary long-distance hike in the Dolomites, stretching from Lago di Braies to Belluno. Most hikers complete it in 6 to 11 days, depending on fitness and pace. 🥾 Total Distance: ~120 km / 75 miles ⛰️ Elevation Gain: Over 23,000 feet 🛏️ Lodging: Stay in family-run rifugios with meals, beds, and wine 🍝 Bonus: Delicious homemade pasta, mountain saunas, and even a microbrewery
